Rachel Jane Martin
I explore the art of pen and ink in conjunction with digital editing as a contemporary extension to the age old art of hand pulled lithography. Each limited edition print evolves from a pen and ink drawing into the final print through digital collage, a multi-tiered process that seamlessly joins duplicated and mirrored fragments together to create the final work. My images are digitally printed out onto inkjet mylar; the mylar is exposed and developed onto photo-sensitive lithographic plates which are then hand printed onto BFK Rives paper.
I investigate nature's eternal life struggle of endurance, vulnerability, growth and destruction through lithography. I give each print an independent life, imprinting them with tenacious, inescapable explorations of ink, color and composition.Through my passion for pattern and movement I release energy by reflecting an ambiguous reality, moving beyond nature's compelling beauty and size to its vital, inescapable importance for the health of our planet. I invite anyone who is overcome by the noise of everyday life, overcrowded by the density of our urban environment or overworked by the daily demands of others to share in the unique artistic moment of connection with the quiet, solitude and peace of nature.
